WEMCHS Counseling Program Mission

Wayne Early/Middle College HS Counseling Program

Mission, Philosophy and Beliefs

The mission of Wayne Early/Middle College HS Counseling Services is to assist our students in becoming healthy, responsible and productive members of society by delivering a comprehensive counseling program addressing student needs and development in the areas of academics, career planning, as well as personal and social growth.  Wayne Early/Middle College HS will pursue this mission by means of collaboration with and support from our community, staff, parents and the school counselor.

The WEMCHS Counseling Department believes that all students:

  • have dignity and worth
  • are capable of learning
  • should be given the opportunity to participate in activities that help them grow and develop in career, academic and personal/social realms
  • have the ability to set individual goals for their lives and are capable of pursuing those goals
  • have ethnic, cultural, racial, sexual differences, and special needs which are valued and considered in planning and implementing the school counseling program
  • should have a family environment that supports and encourages their intellectual, social, personal, physical and emotional well-being

And that the WEMCHS comprehensive counseling program will:

  • Be based on the goals and developmental student competencies outlined by the American School Counselor’s Association, the NC Department of Education, and the Wayne County School District
  • Be evaluated by school, district, and state based upon pre-determined goals and student competencies
  • Provide opportunities for students to develop personal accountability, positive relationships, and respect for themselves, others, and property
  • Collaborate with family, school, and community stakeholders
  • Be willing to seek continuous improvement through self-assessment
  • Be proactive and driven by the documented needs of the WEMCHS student body
  • Support a safe, orderly, and physically comfortable environment that promotes student learning

And that the counselor at Wayne Early/Middle College HS will:

  • Abide by the professional school counseling ethics as advocated by the American School Counselor Association
  • Advocate for all students
  • Engage in professional development activities to enhance counseling competency
  • Seek assistance and input from its advisory council, school, and community members
  • Hold high expectations to increase individual student performances and self-concept
