Announcements, Aug. 13, 2017:

Hello Marvelous Mustangs!  And welcome back for another fantastic year!  Here's a few things that are on the horizon plus some advice, musings and reminders.
😉

If you'd like to order a WEMCHS 2017 "Different By Design" t-shirt, ask your teacher for an order form.  Make checks payable to WEMCHS and bring your payment to the front office. Shirts come in pink, blue, purple and green.  Cost is $12.

Juniors/Seniors:  This Tuesday and Wednesday will be the last days to make schedule changes before the new semester begins.  Please be sure to contact Ms. Taylor if changes need to be made.  Remember that once the course starts, you are in it for the long haul.

Student Pictures:
  • Aug. 25th is picture day (grades 9-11).  Students may pick up an order form in the front office.
  • Senior Picture Day is September 1st between 8:30-1:30 in the auditorium. These are tux and drape pictures.  Sign up for a time slot in the front office. Remember, there is no sitting fee charge if these photos are just being used for the yearbook.  If, however, you wish to consider purchasing these photos, they will charge a $25 fee and then send you proofs to choose from.
Ms. Shanita is in need of about 4-5 student assistants (junior or senior) to help with Senior pictures.  See her if you can help.

Need volunteer hours?
Want to serve your community? Teen Court is looking for high school students to serve in the juvenile justice system of Wayne County.  Sign up with Mrs. Grantham to attend the information session on Tuesday, September, 22nd from 12-1 in the conference room. Lunch will be provided.

Reminder:  All students please be sure to stay off the grass.....especially in the courtyard area.  There should not be any students playing ball or frisbee in the grass at any time except out by the bleacher area.

Seniors!! Remember that this Tuesday at 6PM in the auditorium, we will have our Senior/Parent College Information Night.  We will discuss all things college...applications, essays, financial aid, admission tests (ACT/SAT), scholarships and more. It is crucial for any senior planning to attend a 4-year university that you attend and it is just as crucial that you bring at least one parent. Applying to college is stressful and you will need all the help and support you can get!

Hispanic Senior Students:  We will have a separate Senior/College Information Night for parents who would like a presentation in Spanish.  Our date has not yet been set and Ms. Loury is looking for some Hispanic leader students who would be willing to work this event with her.  Please see her to sign up.

Our WEMCHS Club Preview Day will be this Friday at 3:45 in the auditorium.  All WEMCHS students should be involved in at least one club.  Some of you should consider applying for a leadership position if you feel you are ready to take on more responsibility and are ready to grow in your skills.

Juniors!  Taking your first online class?  Be careful...online classes are deceitful! They often require more work than a face-to-face course.  Here's my common online pitfall list. Try to avoid them and you'll do just fine.
  • Log on in the first 24 hours and do your verification quiz.
  • Log on often!!  Instructors often make changes to the due dates of assignments or add assignments.
  • When you send your assignments, check your send box to be sure it actually was sent.  Keep that documentation in case your instructor claims that he/she did not get it.
  • Find a regularly scheduled time to do your online work each week - at least until you have gotten the hang of it.
  • Don't procrastinate on your assignments!  Some instructors will post the whole week's assignments giving you plenty of time to do them.  But unfortunately too many wait until the last day, then find out the assignments are more time consuming than they thought and they cannot finish in time or if they do finish, the work is rushed and poorly executed.
Seniors!!  Check out the following scholarships on Ms. Loury's webpage.  First go to:http://wemchs490.waynecountyschools.org/ then select Programs and Services.
  • Gates Scholaship
  • Horatio Alger Scholarship
  • Shelton National Leadership Scholarship at NC State
  • Ron Brown Scholars Program
Also, Seniors...check out Ms. Loury's large bulletin board across from her office for lots of tips on applying to college, scholarships, college essays, the difference between ACT & SAT and student resumes.
