State Board Policy Requiring Graduation Projects

North Carolina Project Guidelines

  • The graduation project idea must be student-generated.
  • The graduation project must be of sufficient depth to reflect extensive study and research.
  • The proposed graduation project must be approved by the Advisory Committee, Academic Advisor and the student’s parent.
  • The product must show evidence of knowledge gained in completion of the research paper.
  • The graduation project should not require large monetary expenditures. Expenditures willnot enhance the evaluation of the project.

High School Graduation Project Timeline

Grade 9 
  • Share information with students about Graduation Project in all departments; share with parents
  • Select high school Project Coordinator
  • Appoint Advisory Committee composed of one person per department
  • Share listing of topics with students
  • Have access to Interest Inventory

Grade 10
  • All teachers share listing of topics
  • Each student completes a NC Graduation Project Contract Form during homeroom: Graduation Project Contract
  • Student selects topic of research and completes a Proposal/ Approval Form: Graduation Project Proposal and Letter of Intent
  • The Advisory Committee designates an advisor for each student according to subject of research
  • Advisor/ Student meeting
  • Student selects mentor and mentor completes a confirmation form: Mentor Commitment Form
  • Students attend an informational class presentation skills (taught by Media Specialists)
  • Begin research paper
  • Begin/ maintain portfolio
Grade 11
Grade 12
  • Fine tune Research Paper if needed
  • Select panel; train panel with State rubric
  • Complete all phases of project
  • Plan presentation
  • Present to panel composed of community/teacher representatives
